THE TRUE MEANING OF ‘BESPOKE’

At David Head Furniture we have a very clear idea of what the word ‘bespoke’ means. To us it means a piece of furniture that is completely customised to meet its purpose. It means a kitchen that uses every single centimetre of available space or a wardrobe that nestles neatly and perfectly within an alcove.

In our business, it is impossible to avoid the so called ‘big name bespoke services’. These businesses advertise on television and all over internet, within magazines and at big trade shows. First of all you have to ask, how much of the money that they charge for their services is being spent on the glossy adverts and the tv time?

Upon phoning them, you will be sent out a salesperson, another wage to be paid before any timber is even cut. Next you should ask, is this person merely being paid by the number of units that he or she sells or by the functionality and creativity of the unit?

The last question to ask is just how many people will be working on my unit? At a large company you could be talking about a salesperson, a designer, a buyer, various joiners and finishers and carpenters to actually fit the unit. This is before you even think about Directors, Workshop managers and the like. Where are their wages paid from?

This sort of set up would work, and indeed be neccessary, if they were spending their days working on large scale commercial fit outs, producing large quantities of identical units to be fitted in large scale apartment block fitouts. Does this approach work however if all you are looking for is a nice bookcase to fit in along one wall in your dining room? How much of the price of your work finds its way into the hands of people who have little or no influence on the finished piece of work

This is also where the term ‘Bespoke, can be lost. Big companies thrive upon repititon, making as many of one thing as they can before having to change the settings on the machinery, before they have to produce more plans, before they have to treat a single job seprately to another one.

The trickery begins here! When your initial salesperson comes to your home to take measurements, what you don’t realise is that the majority of the time, all that they are working out is how many of their ‘standard’ units will fit into this space. The measurements for these units normally end in the numbers ’00’ as in ‘500’ ‘600’ or 1000′. Occasionally you may be offered something that ends in ’50’, but this is if you are very lucky! This is done so that the order can be placed quickly and the machines don’t have to be changed. To us the term ‘Bespoke’ also means building something that is unique to our customers requirements, is this is what is happening if the unit sizes are standard?

At David Head Furniture we pride ourselves on giving a completely ‘Bespoke’ service. It is David himself who will come to your home for a consultation. It is David who will speak to you about the best uses of space. It is David who will then take this information away, design your piece, price your piece, and be in constant contact with you during this process.

Say, for instance that you have an alcove next to a fireplace, and that the width of this alcove is 996mm. Would you want a 900mm wide unit with a 48mm infill on either side or would you want a unit that is actually 996mm wide? With a 900mm wide unit, 10% of the usable space is already lost. What if your home has high ceilings, or low ones? What if there is boxing in to consider? Angled walls or ceilings?

Once you have decided to have us make your furniture the process is again simple. A meeting will take place between David and myself. He gives me the plans and the specification, detailed cutting lists will be produced and then away i go. I, with the help of our two lads, will cut, make, and finish the work. David will then take over again when its time to fit. He, again with the help of our two lads, coming to your home and fitting your furniture. Surely that is almost as simple as it can be and with no wasted time.

When planning a piece of cabinetry there are so many things to think about. There are door designs, cornices, pelmets, colours, handles, timbers, finishes, sizes to consider. Do you have particular items that you would like to be able to fit into particular units? Do the shelves of your new bookcase need to be spaced perfectly to fit certain sizes of book? Will all of this be considered by a bigger name company? Will the pins for your adjustable holes be at a standard height or at a height that allows your books to slide in perfectly beneath the shelf above?

We understand that there is a lot to think about and a lot of decisions to be made. This is why we take the term ‘bespoke’ so seriously. If you have an existing piece of furniture that you would like to match up to, that can be done. You have completely free range to choose whatever style you like and in whatever colour and finish you like. There are no limitations on what you can have if you want it, no units ending in ’00’ in a ’78’ space. If you would like to come to the workshop and make changes along the way, that can happen too (you may get chased by an apprentice cabinet maker but they’re not that quick!)

As we see it, the main objective is to work with our customers to produce furniture that perfectly fits your needs, that doesn’t waste any space and that looks and feels exactly how you want to. That, to us, is the meaning of the word ‘Bespoke’
