The Milton Keynes speedy deadline!!
So, we were approached a few weeks ago now by Lauren at Jasmine interiors. She was overseeing the entire interior finish of a large three storey house in Milton Keynes. She had approached a large, well known, supposedly bespoke handmade furniture making company (who have a lot of very glossy looking TV adverts!!) about having some cabinetry made for the house.
They could not meet their agreed date
She agreed all of her prices, designs and timescales, a timescale that was very important as the job needed to be finished before the clients moved into their new home. This was all agreed and everything looked as though it would run smoothly. That was until she received a phone call from the company to inform her that they could not meet their originally agreed upon delivery date.
Seeing as they had now changed the specification of the job you would think that Lauren would have been entitled to an immediate refund of her deposit had she so wished. Alas, you would be wrong! After much arguing and time wasted, the company finally agreed to hit the original date.

Don’t have the right facilities
Plain sailing from here? Not a chance! Another week passed before she was contacted again to be told that, now that someone had actually bothered to look at the agreed upon designs, the company had realised that they did not actually have the facilities to successfully manufacture the agreed upon designs!
Seeing as this company brands themselves as offering a totally bespoke handmade furniture service, you can’t help but find the whole thing pretty funny. It was at this point that her deposit was finally released. This allowed her to let us take over the work and immediately get going.
Up against it
Working with such tight deadlines, David approved the plans very quickly, gave the green light to us all doing as much overtime as we could and approved me placing a very large timber order!! With three weeks to get the job made, sprayed and fitted we were definitely up against it, but we like to think that we all came through in fine style.
The second floor bedroom desk and fitted units, all the doors were fitted on push catches meaning that there were no visible handles. All of the base units featured painted doors with the top and side panels of the units being made from oak veneer that was then stained up darker and then lacquered.

One of the first floor bedrooms. This was the longest desk unit measuring 3m long. All the desk tops were carefully mitred to mean that there were no exposed edges, allowing for a much more uniform painted finish.
Another first floor bedroom, this was a little bit more stripped back and was kept more simple, just allowing a good amount of storage and a couple of shelves. All of the desks, units and shelves featured two colours each to give a great two tone colour effect in each room.
The pieces that the first company apparently couldn’t make were the bookcases that are pictured below. Yes, they weren’t the easiest and they did require a good amount of planning, but they were a long long way away from being even nearly impossible! Without further ado here are the finished bookcases.

It goes to show how large the room is that you probably wouldn’t believe that each of these finished bookcases were nearly 9 foot tall and just over 6 foot wide. I can honestly say that i think these bookcases are among the nicest things we have ever been asked to make.
The bookcases themselves sit on a solid oak fronted plinth box that scribes neatly around the existing skirting, allowing the bookcases to sit back neatly against the wall. The shelves in bookcases were all painted in a lighter beige colour with the backs being painted in a chocolate brownish colour. The front cappings were made from solid oak which was then stained to be a darker finish.
This is one of the bookcases closer up, I think the shadows formed by the placement of the shelves almost gives the whole bookcase the look of an optical illusion.

Here are some pictures of the bookcases during the various stages of construction. You can see in the last picture, the front of the bookcase has grooves machined into it.
These grooves cleverly correspond with identical grooves in the back of the solid oak capping. This allowed for extremely easy fixing as with the use of jointing biscuits, all of the cappings could be cut in individually and easily located before glueing, allowing the overall finish to be as neat as possible.
All in all this was a very unique and interesting job for us, regardless of how speedily it had to be completed. With the amount of work we did in the workshop it also massively cut down on fitting times and the amount of mess we had to make inside the customers home. We think it is hugely important when doing a job such as this to keep disruption whilst fitting to a minimum, which is exactly why we try to finish and fit together as much as we possibly can before we get to site.

We think that this job yet again proves just how bespoke our handmade furniture service is. When larger, better know, apparently bespoke handmade furniture services are turning it away as too complicated, we take pride in the fact that not only could we do it, but we could do it in a much speedier fashion. A bookcase like the one above is mainly down to good planning, accurate setting out and a good working knowledge of angles!
Overall, another highly enjoyable job for us all. We’re all off for a pint and a lie down!
