MEET THE STAFF

It’s been a busy few years at David Head Furniture. So busy in fact that David hasn’t been able to reach the computer to update the blog. He was last seen buried neck deep in a sea of furniture plans and bespoke kitchen designs. He has asked me, his forever impressive and intelligent workshop manager Tom to take over as the resident lyrical wordsmith for the company. I feel that this benefits everyone involved as I am clearly much funnier than David, got better grades in English at school than David and know more long words than David.

Over the coming weeks and months i hope to be able to give you more insight into what goes on at David Head Furniture. There will be posts about the furniture that we make, the products that we use and the techniques that go into every piece of fitted or freestanding furniture. I am planning to show you more about the design process and how, after an initial customer consultation, we can design you a completely unique and bespoke kitchen. There will be plans and renderings, pictures of our work at various stages of the manufacturing process as well as pictures of completed pieces.

I thought it would be nice to start with a meet the staff section. When you put your faith in David you put your faith in us all and it important to us that you know a little more about the craftsmen who will be making your new kitchen, bedroom or office.

David started David Head Furniture in 1997, an impressive feat seeing as he has not yet hit 40 (it’s very soon though!) He began the company with his wife Lisa, armed only with a small van, some handtools and the wits that God gave him. Over the years he built an extension onto his old house, giving himself workshop space before moving to a dedicated unit on Station Road, Flitwick. Eventually our last move, four years ago, took us to a 2500sqft workshop on Faldo road industrial estate, Barton-le-clay. It is hard to think of a type of furniture that David has not designed, crafted, finished and fitted over the years and he uses all of this experience to constantly improve the quality and design of the bespoke furniture that we produce. Even after nearly 20 years in business he has not lost any of his enthusiasm for innovation, constantly wanting to try new ideas, new methods and new products. Greying slightly at the temples, something he mistakes for a sign of maturity, he oversees the design and fitting processes, takes care of all of the paperwork, makes sure we all have jobs, prices new work, orders practically everything we could ever need and spends way too much time wheeling around on his office chair.

Tom Fullbrook (Me!)- Workshop Manager

As the beating heart of the company and as the most inspiring and devilishly handsome member of the team it is my job to oversee the manufacturing side of the business. From Davids designs i will produce cutting lists and simplified workshop plans, scheduling work according to the fitting dates David sets with the customer. Myself and the team will then craft these designs into reality, producing furniture that is built to stand the test of time. I also oversee the finishing process, be it painted, oiled or lacquered, through our purpose built spray booth. Due to Davids fear of being upstaged, I am often the last one allowed to leave the workshop for fitting duties, allowing me time to adjust Davids office chair, hide everyone elses tools and nap. Convinced that i am a morning person, David mistakes my preference for getting to the workshop early as a sign of enthusiasm. He is still yet to realise that unless i can get a couple of mugs of coffee down me before i am forced into any kind of human interaction, let alone managerial duties, my manner tends to be slightly less polite than is desirable. I began my furniture making career in 2003, accepting Davids offer of an apprenticeship. Initially i worked for David for three and half years before leaving to gain more experience of different areas of joinery and cabinet making. I came back at the beginning of 2011 and have acted as Davids workshop manager since then. Where David is the artistic one with all of the ideas, I like to think of myself more as the technically minded and organised one. I attain my results through a heavy reliance on numbers and straight lines!

Alex and Ollie complete our team. They are both approaching the end of the third year of their apprenticeships, they will finish their qualifications this summer. They both work in the manufacturing, finishing and fitting of our furniture. Alex has the misfortune of being the boss’s son, ensuring that he is constantly the butt of every joke, gets blamed for everything and actually has to live with David.

Alex has a huge flare for fitting and his most enjoyable part of any job is seeing it all finished and in place. Over the past three years he has turned into a very skilled and talented cabinet maker. He has unfortunately inherited a terrible sense of humour from his father and is regularly deployed into the spray booth just to give the rest of us a break.

Ollie started his apprenticeship with Luton council, mainly learning his trade fitting kitchens and more general site carpentry work. He elected to undertake the third year of his training with us and has now been with us for just over six months. Despite mainly working on site for the past two years, he has shown a real aptitude for the demands of the workshop. Ollie has a real eye for detail and measurements and works with a fantastic level of accuracy and care. Ollie is mainly left alone due to his ability to, at the tender age of 19, grow a better beard than any of us.

In the picture above, the lads can be seen in their box, we put them in there each evening and let them out again at 8am.

I hope you have enjoyed my first post and i look forward to bringing you more very soon.
