A Wonderfully Wooden Christmas – Part 1

Now, those who know me the best, and to be honest even those who don’t know me that well are aware of my fondness for Christmas.

Ok, so the word ‘fondness’ might be an understatement.

It seems as if with every passing year i get more and more excited about the magical event that happens at the end of December.

Every year my lovely wife indulges this behavior and allows me to run around like a kid on a sugar high, wrapping fairy lights around everything that doesn’t move (and some things that do, i lit up one of the cats one year) before calmly following me, taking them down and putting them back up nicely.

Unlike a lot of people, my excitement at Christmas has stayed with me even after my childhood has ended.

Christmas as a kid in my family usually involved watching the Vicar of Dibley on Christmas eve and then being hung upside down by my feet and lowered unceremoniously into the large chimney decoration that my Grandpa used to use to house all of our presents in on boxing day.

In between that we mainly ate too much and laughed when my Dad wore light up reindeer antlers in the dark on Christmas morning. After i grew up and moved out I spent hours hanging fairly lights around my one bedroom rented flat.

I loved it but really it only served in making my home visible from space and sending my electric bill for December that year through the roof.

I consider it a minor miracle that the whole place didn’t burn to the ground when i came home drunk from my works Christmas party, turned on all the lights and decided i wanted a sausage sandwich at 3-30 in the morning whilst playing Slade on the stereo.

I met my wife for the first time 8 days before Christmas, she met my Dad for the first time on Christmas morning.

The fact that she survived this was highly significant as he opened the door in his Christmas apron, santas little helper hat and then proceeded to dance and sing his way around the kitchen before serving up the obligatory Christmas morning bacon roll.

That she agreed to see me again speaks highly to her character, and possibly

his dancing ability!

One of my favorite days of the whole Christmas season is the day that the decorations go up.

We have gotten to a point where we make almost as big a deal out of this day as we do Christmas day itself.

We have started to put in place certain traditions that take place on this day.

I normally cook a roast dinner so that i cant make too much of a mess with the decorations, my wife makes everything look beautiful, i drink a lot of port and we watch the following films- Elf, Nativity and Its a wonderful life (probably the only film that gets more than one airing a year) and maybe miracle on 34th street if we have time or i haven’t fallen into a port and roast dinner induced coma.

This is also the first day where the Christmas songs are permitted to be on in the house, hence i crank up the volume and bob along whilst somehow managing to not chop off my fingers preparing vegetables.

There is a growing trend for homemade decorations, I have made a few myself for this year which i am way too excited to put up (so excited that my wife had to kindly turn down my request to get the tree out of the loft on November 15th).

I thought that i would make you all fully embrace my Christmas cheer this year, whether you like it or not.

Therefore i am (time permitting) hoping to put together a small series of festive themed blogs, bringing you some great ideas if you fancy your hand at a gloriously homemade Christmas.

So here are the first batch of pictures, get yourself a glass of something, speed eat a box of mince pies and enjoy!

So there we go, my first batch of presents to you (it’s a cheesy line i know but i’m sticking with it!) The majority of these ideas are possible with a few bits of wood, some paint, glitter and a little bit of artistic flair.

I have already spent way too many evenings painting things with glitter paint whilst watching Christmas specials on the telly and i don’t intend to stop any time soon!

Hope you enjoy the pictures, i will hopefully bore you with more of my festive ramblings sometime soon.

I’m off to stick cotton wall balls all over the wall and make it look like its snowing in my dining room…..

25 Tremendously Traditional Kitchens

Having already dealt with the subject of the modern kitchen, i thought the next course of action should be to look a little more at the more traditional styled kitchen.

Typically the more traditional kitchens we are asked to make are of a shaker style, or at least a close relative off.

Where a modern kitchen centres around straight lines and blocks of colour, traditional kitchens feature a lot more working parts.

The most complicated thing about a traditional kitchen is normally integrating more modern design aspects including pull out larders, drawers and corner units.

Shaker kitchens will normally feature a framework around the doors and drawers, this will hide the front edges of the units.

The doors will have an inset panel rather than being completely flat.

Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line

Sometimes these doors will then have an additional moulding around the panel to further the shaker design.

Typically you will see a heavy moulded cornice and pelmet underneath the wall units as well as grooves running vertically down any end panels.

There are a lot more things to catch the eye in a traditional kitchen and are most typically seen in older houses or houses with irregular walls or angles.

This is because a more traditional kitchen lends itself better to being a little less regular.

Angled doors and irregular sized units can look out of place on a modern kitchen, but on a traditional kitchen they will only add to the sense of it being completely unique.

The tricky side of a traditional kitchen is working out how all of these pieces are going to fit together and sit together to create an even looking kitchen throughout.

As with a modern kitchen, the easiest part is making the units themselves.

Once they are made it is usually a case of making the framework to suit. Once the framework is right then the doors can be made to suit the framework and so on.

The most important part of the process will always be the initial design.

As i said in my earlier blog about modern kitchens, David uses some very clever software that not only helps us to work out the sizes of all of the units but also allows us to produce several 3D renderings, allowing you to see your kitchen from every angle before work is started.

handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT

That way if you would like to make any changes these can be easily made before production begins.

The most regular worktop choices for this style of kitchen tends to be either granite, which although more expensive than other alternatives is still one of the best and hardest wearing materials you can have, or a wooden ‘butcher block’ style finish, Either of these, when used correctly, can help tie all of the seperate elements together.

Picking appliances is also important as you want them to fit neatly within the kitchen without looking too modern and therefore out of place.

A lot of appliances can normally be neatly integrated, and can normally be hidden behind doors, making them look like any other regular unit.

With all of that in mind, here are another 25 beautifully designed and finished kitchens, all in a traditional style.

You can see in these examples that a lot of these kitchens also feature moulded posts to the corners of the units, overmantels around a large oven and also glass panelled doors, allowing for one or more display style units.

Traditional kitchens are more likely to be made from solid timber or feature a painted finish.

A nice idea if having a painted finish is to have the main kitchen in one colour and if you have a kitchen island to finish that in a different colour.

Choosing the right handle for this type of kitchen is important and you are more likely to see curved doors used.

A lovely design feature on a more traditional kitchen is to use a belfast sink, with the front visible, this also serves to break up the line of units and give a more interesting look to your kitchen.

There are so many other things to consider that i have most likely forgotten the majority of them, but there are surely more than enough here to be going along with.

Kitchens can be expensive things, so they are important to get right first time.

Hopefully if you are thinking of having a new kitchen there are a few good ideas here that you may like to integrate into your own design.

Here are a few of our most recent traditional style kitchens.

If nothing else it should prove that we don’t just write about them, we most certainly make them too!

You can also see on some of our kitchens, the use of painted wall panelling, between the worktops and the wall units, this is a lovely idea instead of using tiles as it tends to give a slightly warmer feeling overall.

Handmade Designer Furniture – 25 Lovely Libraries

Since David gave me the blog on handmade designer furniture at the end of March, i noticed the other day that i had somehow managed to compile 30 blog posts in six months.

Too many coffees writing about handmade designer furniture

This to me represents an amazing amount of time spent writing about handmade designer furniture, rolling around in my office chair and probably hundreds of cups of coffee that have been thrown down my neck in a sometimes futile attempt to keep myself awake long enough to finish a coherent sentence.

I have already written on many subjects, trying to keep methods easy to understand and also keeping the long words to minimum (that’s for my benefit not yours, i don’t know many).

I can only imagine what would happen if i let my English teaching younger sister look too closely at my writing, suffice to say i fear that there would be red pen virtually everywhere.

Handmade designer furniture for libraries

Instead of writing about a completely new subject, i thought i would slightly re-visit and expand upon an old handmade designer furniture blog (mainly because i fear i am actually running out of ideas now).

One of my very first blogs featured a small collection of interesting and innovative bookcases that were unique and functional. How do you expand on a bookcase? Why, a whole library of course!

What happens when a simple bookcase or even two isn’t enough? What happens when you’re enough of a clever so and so that you have compiled literally thousands of books to store?

What happens when you are trying to make your friends think you are cleverer than you are?! Obviously there is no fear of that ever happening to me, my friends know I’m an idiot.

I love seeing books displayed, i don’t know why but to me there is something wonderfully old fashioned about seeing rows and rows of books spread out upon bookcase after bookcase. It makes me think of huge old houses, roaring fires and cups of hot chocolate. I have literally no idea why but it does.

I have already composed a few of my ’25’ blogs on handmade designer furniture, and i thought this could easily turn into another one.

After yet more time spent rolling around on the office chair and looking through the internet, i found some beautiful examples of home libraries. Some of them are so large that i honestly would not like to guess how large some of the homes are but that’s besides the point.

Basically, if you like books and ways of storing books then this is the collection of handmade designer furniture is for you!!

Exquisite handmade designer furniture

Handmade designer furniture with no need for wallpaper

Handmade designer furniture for rooms with high ceilings

Handmade designer furniture, a perfect fit for any room

Functional handmade designer furniture

Modern handmade designer furniture

Classic handmade designer furniture

Stylish handmade designer furniture

I find myself getting worryingly excited about all of those pictures. I am praying that one day i may own a home big enough to house this many books and bookcases.

You wouldn’t think that a simple bookcase could be so versatile, but within these pictures you can see bookcases that go around alcoves, into funny angles and even ones that have hidden doors, you have bookcases with ladders and also bookcases with small seats or even sofas built right into them, some really ingenious examples of handmade designer furniture.

One of these days i want to turn my spare room into a proper reading snug, obviously it means that my wife and i can have one less child and we’ll have to spend a lot of money on books to fill them but i think i can convince her!

Plus we get to work on some handmade designer furniture projects

Even with the rise of people reading on tablets or even on their phones, i hope that people will never stop buying and displaying actual books, there is something about the way they furnish a home that will always be close to my heart.

Plus it means we get to work on some great handmade designer furniture projects.

As ever, i hope that you have seen some handmade designer furniture on here that you like and perhaps even something that will inspire you to rush out and buy thousands of books.

If you do decide to buy thousands of books and want to display them in a beautiful and well designed manner then we would love to hear from you. You can reach David on 01525 753737 or at david@davidhead.co.uk

Home is where the shelving unit is – Handmade Designer Furniture

Good morning all, and here we go with another handmade designer furniture blog.

So after working hard in the workshop for the past three days i have decided that enough is enough and have escaped back to the comfortable environment of the office.

I can hear noises coming from the workshop so i assume that the lads are working hard on some new handmade designer furniture.

Either that or they have cottoned on to an idea i had a while back that if i just turned a couple of machines on and left them running, David would assume work was going on and i could have a nap behind my bench.

I may just pop my head out and check on them in a bit! So, the other day in a fit of creativity (i was surprised by it as well) i thought i would have a little go at making a neat little shelving unit.

I didn’t want it to be regular, not just a box with a few shelves. I wanted to make some handmade designer furniture that was a bit more interesting.

When i say interesting i basically mean something that is just about interesting enough to blog about (i don’t just throw these things together you know!).

As is fast becoming my custom i did a little rooting around on the internet.   handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line After i had done that, i actually started looking for handmade designer furniture shelving unit ideas (Wahey!).

I did actually end up finding something very clever, I will start by showing you the finished product (As i’ve said before, the first picture i put on here automatically becomes the picture you see on Facebook so it’s always better to start with a good one!!).

Can you see that it spells?

I am honestly not trying to insult your intelligence (it took me three attempts to spell that which is a worry, and unbelievably ironic) by asking that question.

The reason i have to ask that is that it took my lads way too long to work out that the unit actually said the word HOME.

Surely i should be allowed to hand out written warnings for that level of epic stupidity.

I thought this was quite a clever idea, the handmade designer furniture piece is just over 3 foot tall, just under 2 foot wide and just under a foot deep.

It was designed as such as it allowed me to get the absolutely most out of the offcuts that i had lying around the workshop.

I thought i would give a brief ‘how to’ in case any of you budding woodworkers fancied having a go yourselves, it’s really a very simple handmade designer furniture build.

First up was the cutting list, this took a little effort as i think it was a thursday when i made this and so i was probably drunk at the time.   handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line The important thing here was to make sure that all the letters ended up the same size and all of the overhangs ended up the same.

Now the sizes pieces need to be is governed by the thickness of the material. In this instance i used 22mm moisture resistant MDF, for no other reason that i had quite a bit of it left over from a job!

The first pieces to cut are the base and the main upright. All my sizes are in mm.

The main upright was 1000 x 220 and  the base was 520 x 220.

The base of the  handmade designer furniture unit needs to be screwed to the main upright so that the main upright is central to the base.

After that it is just a case of cutting the pieces for the letters and screwing them together.

To make the E you need 2 pieces at 248 x 220 and 1 piece at 124 x 220.

To make the M you need 1 piece at 248 x 220, 1 piece at 226 x 220 and 1 piece at 124 x 220 To make the O you need 2 pieces at 226 x 220 and 1 piece at 248 x 220.

To make the H you need 1 piece at 226 x 220 and 1 piece at 248 x 220.   handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT
handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk
Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line I will stress again that these sizes work for 22mm thick material, if using a different thickness, adjustments would need to be made.

Once you have all of your pieces it is just a case of screwing it all together (and gluing if you would like, making sure to drill all relevant pilot holes etc as needed, depending on material).

With a painted unit such as this you can leave all of the screw heads exposed, as long as they are beneath the level of the timber, and then fill over them with a good 2 pack filler (you can get this at any reputable DIY shop).

When the filler is dry, sand it back and also sand all of your front edges so that they are smooth and ready for painting.

Then simply give the handmade designer furniture a coat of primer, give it sand again and then paint as many coats of your chosen colour as you would like, giving a light sand in between coats.

The back i did completely separate. This was made from 9mm MDF and sanded all the way around.

The size for this was 770 x 270. I decided to paint this in a different, darker colour just to give the unit a nice two tone effect.

It is important to have this back for stability, otherwise the handmade designer furniture unit will have a little wobble, You can also add a little angled piece in the bottom corner like i have done if you would like to make it even more solid.   handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT

Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line Here it is from another couple of angles (just because i took a few photos and like showing off!).

I will also share a few of the pictures i found online that served as the inspiration, You will see that this unit can also be screwed to the wall, if you were doing this then you wouldn’t need the back, but just a few neat angled brackets for wall fixing.

So there you have it, a neat little handmade designer furniture unit, and a neat piece of design, something a little different.   handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT

My wife said the other day that one of my biggest talents was solving problems that have never existed in the first place.

I was just pleased she thought i had some talent in any area! Right, i can’t wing this out any further, it’s gone quiet in the workshop, i think i need to go and check on the lads.

25 Distinguished Offices – Handmade Designer Furniture

Here is the next blog focussing on handmade designer furniture. I tried. I really did…..

I’m sure there are plenty of words that begin with ‘O’ that could have gone before the word ‘office’ in the title but i’ll be dammed if i can think of one.

If you all fancy making me feel really silly (or at least sillier than i do most of the time) then please feel free to comment on this blog on Facebook with a good word beginning with ‘O’. handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line Firstly I realised the other day that i hadn’t mentioned some good news coming out of the workshop this summer.

Both of our lads, Alex and Ollie are now fully qualified! They both finished their NVQ level 3 qualifications earlier in the summer, and are now coming to the slow and painful realisation that they may well be doing this for the rest of their lives!

Its a tough life being an apprentice, you get yelled at seemingly for no reason, you see people (lets be honest here, they see me) making things look so easy but can seem impossible for no good reason when you do it yourself and you have to do pretty much all of the cleaning up.

As an apprentice you do a lot of running around, a lot of fetching things and a lot of the menial jobs that your supervisor really cant be bothered to do any more.

You do all of this whilst trying to learn your trade and hoping to glean enough meaningful information that you can improve and become a trusted member of staff. handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line Well i can say that both of our lads have come through brilliantly, and if either of them are reading this, get off your phone, put the kettle on and sweep the workshop.

All i miss is the one day a week that they used to go to college, it was a simpler and peaceful time….

So, a couple of blogs ago i started this handmade designer furniture series of ’25s’.

The idea being to showcase some of the best handmade designer furniture that i could find, showing examples of what could be possible in your own home.

We have so far covered wardrobes and media units and today i thought i would take a look at the home office.

More and more of us work from home, In the age of wireless internet and all sorts of clever things that allow people to access their work networks at home it is becoming less and less essential to actually have to leave the house to work.

I have no idea how anything technical works, i helped my sister and brother in law move house the other day. handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line When they were setting up the television, they couldn’t get a signal and my sister asked me if i could have a look at it.

My response of ‘what on earth do you want me to do with it, paint it?!’ didn’t go down well.

Somehow it all works and i know a lot of people who regularly get out of bed, walk into their office at home and start work in their pyjamas. It makes me extremely extremely jealous!

With more and more people working from home it does mean that more and more people are paying more attention to what they do with often the smallest bedroom in the house! handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line When planning a home office you can just go and buy a desk at IKEA and put your computer on it, or you can have some specific handmade designer furniture built and fitted, something built perfectly to your own specifications and made to house all of your equipment.

You can incorporate filing cabinets, printer units, clever ways of hiding all of the cables, all sorts. Here are 25 of the best home offices i found, as ever all of these designs and ideas can easily be accomplished by David Head Furniture.

25 Wonderful Wardrobes – handmade designer furniture

Our next blog on handmade designer furniture is about wardrobes.

You know the place where you put all your fancy designer clothes, and clothes are important to a lot of people, just ask my wife.

I have lost count of the endless number of Saturday afternoons that are lost wandering afround the centre MK or bedford interchange park or any number of other shopping centres that she likes to frequent.

I swear that if you added up the amount of miles i have walked following my wife around and often acting as a human coat hanger, i would have walked far enough to get me a long way away from her.

‘Does this make me look fat?’ ‘Darling, do you really need another one of those?’ ‘You actually expect me to wear that?’ ‘Can’t we just go to Greggs yet?’ ‘I’m just going to go and look in HMV for a bit’ ‘No of course i didn’t run away’ ‘Yes, i’ll buy it for you if it means we can go home’ ‘What do you mean you’re going to buy the one you saw in the first shop?’ ‘Please……….just kill me……’ handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line I’m sure it is an experience that we can all relate to.

As a handmade designer furniture maker there is only one sentence that is more terrifying than any of the above, and it is this ‘I think i’m running out of wardrobe space’ Absolutely bloody chilling……

I have also learned that replying to said sentence with the line ‘can’t you just throw something away’ (a sentence i regretted the very instant it had left my big stupid mouth) is followed by getting hit in the head by a flying shoe and the threat that ‘one day, when you are sleeping peacefully, I will cut you’.

She’s getting a new wardrobe.

The thing that is so soul destroying about that sentence, to me, is that obviously i am going to be expected to make it.

I don’t get a single word in on design obviously, i just get to make it.

It’s like working for David but with even less pride involved.

Now, obviously by making it myself it does afford me the opportunity to save myself some money, but have you ever found yourself lying in bed at 11;30 on a thursday evening, trying to tune out your wife (6 years together, still haven’t managed it) thinking that i wish i had an excuse just to order one?!

I even used the whole ‘imagine if someone asked you to do your job all weekend’ excuse to try and get out of it.

Unfortunately that is where this blog got me into deeper trouble.

Her argument is that as i clearly enjoy woodworking so much that i am prepared to dedicate thousands of words to it, surely i should relish the chance to do more of it over the weekend.

She’s definitely getting a new wardrobe. And that is how it came to be that i found myself googling ‘wardrobe designs’ (closely followed by ‘how to fake your own death’) in the vain hope that i could find something relatively simple, send it to her and await her approval.

In a surprising stroke of genius i decided to combine this blog with keeping my wife happy and have therefore collected together my favourite 25 wardrobe designs that i have found in my searching.

Now don’t for a second think that the majority of these would fit in my bedroom.

I got carried away.

You never know, she may see one she likes and agree to a smaller version, either that or I’ve got myself in massive trouble and she’s going to want a bigger house to hold a bigger wardrobe.

Who knows at this point? Now, all of the stunning wardrobe designs you are going to see are perfectly possible for us to make.

They are in all different colours and all different configurations, but as you know, with David Head Furniture pretty much anything is possible when it comes to handmade designer furniture.

There are so many options with wardrobes that you would never expect, different finishes, different styles, handles or push catches, different pull outs, internal draws, rail systems.

All sorts.

Please enjoy looking at all the following handmade designer furniture photos and if you see some handmade designer furniture you like then just yell!

HANDMADE DESIGNER FURNITURE – PART 6

We have so nearly finished this handmade designer furniture blog my friends.

The lads will soon be pulling down the shutter, turning the lights off and getting into their box for the evening.

There is just enough time for one last collection of pictures from the last five years.

I just gave David a kick and he stirred ever so slightly.

I honestly hope that you have enjoyed the handmade designer furniture pictures (my hilarious commentary aside) as i think it does show the work of a company who does know what it’s doing! (sometimes!) .

For the last time……

OFFICES & STUDIES – HANDMADE DESIGNER FURNITURE

One should take Kamagra 30-45 minutes before sexual without prescription viagra activity. However, understand some medical conditions can lead to two or more things simultaneously (research has shown it’s inefficient even viagra sale pop over to this web-site for younger people), but it means we aren’t giving our daily activities the attention they require. This pill inhibit the breakdown (by the enzyme PDE5) of a viagra generic chemical called cGMP, produced in the erectile tissue of the penis during sexual arousal, and gives rise to a hard erection. These factors can include hormonal changes such as post pregnancy and pre menstrual, illnesses, physical, psychological, emotional such as stress, and anxiety Problems with the producing and releasing of the digestive hormones secretin and cholecystokinin Deficiency of minerals, race elements, bicarbonates, and vitamins Whole body acidity Toxic materials inside the body may seem a bit complex, but it is actually a list of the five hardest viagra pill for woman industries.

I’d like to be able to tell you that the things in the background of this picture are absolutely huge………but they’re not…………it’s just a small oak side table!

A neat little oak freestanding desk.

This was actually deceptively quick to make and therefore was extremely cost effective.

You can see here the colour of the oak veneer before the lacquer is applied. Maximum use of a small room!

This handmade designer furniture was only about 1.6m wide and yet the amount of storage and desk space is seriously impressive.

All oak veneer and again finished in our hard wearing lacquer.

Right in the foreground you can see a small part of the bookcase we manage to cram in there as well!

LIVING ROOM – HANDMADE DESIGNER FURNITURE

Another unit made to fit directly into a alcove.

The curves were put onto the TV unit mainly so that customer didn’t have a sharp corner to walk into when coming through the door!

This handmade designer furniture was made using tulip wood and then stained dark before it was lacquered to be as hard wearing as possible. handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line

Again made from tulip wood this handmade designer furniture console table was eventually stained very dark, almost black.

You can see that draw fronts were made to have a curve in them to match the top.

This was achieved by making them square and then planing and sanding the curve in.

This solid oak fronted sideboard was made for a kitchen/ dining room in Moggerhanger.

It neatly avoided impeding on the space around the dining room table and was finished using our hard wearing lacquer.

Another deceptively difficult small piece of handmade designer furniture.

This was made from sapele and the bottom two shelves had to be very carefully marked out to fit around the legs neatly.

This was made to house a TV and other home entertainment devices.

handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line Another TV unit.

More strange angles.

Solid oak again but this time stained to match existing furniture.

I honestly can’t remember if the walls in the house matched the unit or not!

The picture of them all stacked up like this makes them look a little less special than they were but these were actually some very posh and heavy duty interior doors.

The ones on the left were eventually glazed and beaded.

Some handmade designer furniture were painted and some were stained.

You can see them here before the ends are trimmed off.

They were made to function as fire doors and met all current regulations in that regard.

Where traditional joinery isn’t our usual field, i think it is worth proving that we really can make anything!

It was nice to re-learn some traditional mortice and tenon techniques on these as well!

No it isn’t a pointless set of stairs that leads nowhere.

This handmade designer furniture is actually a handy storage unit.

Made with DVDs and CDs in mind this was made using moisture resistant MDF that was mitred to form the steps and give a good even surface to paint.

It’s not every day you get asked to make a top for a well but here it is!

The solid timber is actually double thickness and the skill here was marking out and cutting a perfect circle.

I really like the fact that the grain travels in several different directions as well.

This handmade designer furniture was eventually topped with glass. handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line

More painted bookcase fun! Another example of how much storage you can gain from what looks to be a relatively small space.

A TV unit for Barton-le-clay.

You can again see the oak veneer before staining and the doors before the glass is fitted.

BEDROOM – HANDMADE DESIGNER FURNITURE

These handmade designer furniture wardrobes are a great mix of lacquered walnut and BA zurfiz doors.

You can see where the builder has actually cut the coving directly around the tops of our units making them completely

integrated with the rest of the room.

Another nice oak veneered unit, this time fitted into a small alcove.

You can see the neat infilling either side of the drawers which then fits directly into the wall.

In this situation we make the top ever slightly over sized on handmade designer furniture so that we can scribe it in perfectly on site.

Unfortunately the soft toys are not provided by us! handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line

Another example of a ‘floating’ unit.

More grain matching on this handmade designer furniture (walnut) unit with some very chunky handles.

A very functional piece of handmade designer furniture.

And so there we have it.

I was flagging a little in the middle but i’ve made it!

I dread to think how many words i have written in total!

Hopefully this whole series on handmade designer furniture has given you something pretty to look at for a few minutes!

In all seriousness i hope that this collection will help anyone who isn’t sure about exactly what it is that they might be looking for from a piece of handmade designer furniture.

Maybe in a few years i will do this again, when i can feel my hands again. Once more, if you see some handmade designer furniture that you like please please please call us!!

You can do that on 01525 753737 or at david@davidhead.co.uk Thank you for reading all of this……

HANDMADE DESIGNER FURNITURE – PART 5

I’m beginning to question the wisdom of this whole handmade designer furniture exercise.

My hands really hurt now and I’m losing the feeling in my fingers.

This means that I’m making more mistakes and everything is taking me ages to write.

Also my forearms have been leaning on the desk throughout this and are now very red and sore.

I certainly couldn’t do this office thing all the time!! Still, i promised a six part series on handmade designer furniture and here we have number 5.

I’ve really enjoyed this from a nostalgic point of view, looking back at a lot of our work from the past 5 years has made me realise the diversity of the work that we do and just how bespoke we are.

As well as the fact that everyone who has worked for us over that time has helped us create some really beautiful handmade designer furniture.

Wow, that was a little deep for a Tuesday afternoon.

Maybe I’ve reached the tired and emotional part of this blog writing session! And on we go again…………..

Handmade Designer Furniture – Bedroom Furniture

Solid oak fronted wardrobes in Flitwick. I love the grain on the door panels here, it’s extremely pretty.

This was finished in our hard wearing lacquer.

You can just about see the nice little bedside table to match the wardrobes.

Lovely example of handmade designer furniture.

The same bedroom but on the other wall.

Hopefully you can make out the grain matching on the draw fronts here.

We pride ourselves on this sort of attention to detail.

A pair of tiny little bedside tables.

Sometimes doors this small can actually be harder to make than larger doors as machining such small pieces of timber can be very difficult and at times a little scary!

I liked the chestnut sideboard so much that i thought i would share a picture of it during the making process.

Here you can see it before it was stained.

Chestnut is a very similar timber to oak but is less dense and has a slightly creamier colour.

I actually prefer using it as it tends to machine up better and with less ripping out.

A very clever single bed made from oak veneer.

There are three draws at the bottom that are fitted on push runners to take away the need for handles.

We did fit proper slats to this for underneath the mattress.

handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line A sweet little mirror made using oak.

It has been stained up and then oiled.

We made a couple of these for some matching dressing tables.

Couldn’t stop from getting Alex in this photo unfortunately.

5m of handmade designer furniture units!

Matching doors and a heck of a lot of storage!

A hand painted and oak bedside table.

There’s not a lot else i can say about this!!

This was more of a personal project for me and in fact i think i have now made 4 of these toy boxes for my nieces.

Their other uncle might be funny but I’m sure my enhanced carpentry skills will win them over in time. handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line

I really liked the panelled effect on the headboard and end of this bed.

The oak cappings immediately give it a little warmth as well.

Handmade Designer Furniture – Dining Room Furniture

This is another of my favourites.

This is actually made from solid chestnut and then stained up to match a customers existing furniture.

The draws in the bottom of the handmade designer furniture unit are all made using traditional dovetails and the wiring for the lighting is all neatly hidden by the cornice on the top of the unit.

handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford lineAnother piece of handmade designer furniture shown before the finishing takes place.

You can see the front framework on the front of the bookcase unit has all been taped on.

This was to ensure it was all machined correctly before finishing.

It’s also interesting to point out that a lot of our furniture actually starts out green!!

A definitely not normal shaped handmade designer furniture unit here!

This was made to fit around some existing pipework.

The adjustable shelves were all cut around this and you can see that due to the span of the unit, a front pillar was required to stop the shelves from bowing when loaded.

This has been taken with the doors off so that you can see the adjustable shelf system that we use.

A downstairs office in Ampthill.

This was made using solid oak framework and veneered doors.

You can again notice the grain matching on the draw fronts.

Handmade Designer Furniture – Office Furniture

A very simple handmade designer furniture design here for a work/office space in Holloway, London.

These were built to lip around an air conditioning unit at the top.

The doors are a very simple sprayed white flat panel.

handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line The units behind.

You can see the cut outs at the top more clearly from the side.

Again these featured adjustable shelf holes and give a massive amount of storage.

These were the desk units for this job.

There were seven of these in total and they are shown here without the doored units that sit above them.

All in all the units were 3 meters tall and spanned roughly 8 meters of 2 walls.

The whole job including the wardrobes and another desk took one very unlucky man (me!) six weeks of non stop sanding and

spraying!!

Here they are unfinished.

making them all is actually the quick bit, its the spraying that takes the time.

the doors and draws were fitted on push mechanisms for a very modern look.

Open handmade designer furniture units made from oak melamine.

This was made for the same place as the unit above which was in a beautiful office in Wrest park.

They obviously needed a lot of storage! handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line

And here is the handmade designer furniture unit without the doors on!

There are 50 adjustable shelves there that had to be edged, individually, by one man (me again as everyone else had buggered off on holiday).

All made from a very hard wearing oak melamine on MDF, the doors were a lacquered veneer.

Nearly there good people, nearly there!

I’m on schedule too to get all of these finished in one afternoon which was a little worried about when i started.

I feel honour bound to mention again that if you do see anything that you like you can reach us at david@davidhead.co.uk or on 01525753737.

HANDMADE DESIGNER FURNITURE – PART 4

So, I’ve had a cuppa and i’m ready to crack my knuckles and get back to this blog on handmade designer furniture.

I can hear the faint strains of some truly awful dance music wafting its way from the workshop and so i assume the lads are happy.

I just checked David for a pulse and reassuringly he’s still with us, he’d just stopped snoring.

The fingers are starting to hurt badly now, like Bryan Adams in ‘Summer of 69’ i intend to play it til my fingers bled, and if i keep going like this i think its becoming more than likely that they will!

I’m fast running out of funny and pithy ways to introduce the next round of photos (to be fair 3 was a stretch) and so i shall simply thank you for still being here and proceed!

Handmade Designer Furniture – Bedroom Furniture

A bedroom in Milton Keynes. More excellent use of space here using high gloss white.

Notice the curved door on the right hand side that we used to open up the room and not leave a large end panel right next to the bedroom door.

A good example of handmade designer furniture.

A nice little unit in a child’s playroom.

Using the different colours on the pull out bins was fun and it gives a lovely to space to show off some of the family’s collectable toys.

handmade furniture bedford line CASE STUDIES   |    GALLERY   |    REVIEWS    |    CONTACT handmade designer furniture | 01525 753737 | info@davidhead.co.uk Unit A7, Faldo Road, Barton Industrial Estate, Barton-Le-Clay, Bedfordshire, MK45 4RP handmade furniture bedford line

Handmade Designer Furniture – Kitchen Shaker

Another shaker kitchen here, featuring in frame doors and draws, a spray painted finish and some open oak units in certain area.

The granite worktops really finish what to us looks like more of a ‘farmhouse’ style kitchen

You can also see the effect of the under lighting under the wall units against the far wall.

A great example of handmade designer furniture for the kitchen.

I have a confession to make here.

The right hand side of the kitchen and the island weren’t made by us!

What i am showing off here is the fact that the unit around the fridge freezer is us and i don’t think you would ever know that it wasn’t part of the original kitchen!!

The other side of the same kitchen, this was again made in exactly the same style as the original kitchen.

You can see the wine cooler set into the middle and may just be able to make out the open oak shelving on the left hand side and the handy space for kitchen trays at the top.

The bosses kitchen!! I’m including this for no other reason that to show how the other half live!!

I suppose it’s nice to look at if you like that sort of thing.

And onto my Mum and Dads kitchen!!

was actually a kitchen re-face.

They kept their existing kitchen units and had new doors, panels, handles, worktops and flooring.

Much cheaper than ripping the whole lot out and starting again!!

A great example of cost effective handmade designer furniture.

Handmade Designer Furniture – Boys Bedroom

A lovely use of space in a boys bedroom (did the football lampshade tip you off?!).

These was all made using oak veneer and then finished in a hard wearing lacquer.

Handmade Designer Furniture – Oak Bar

The oak bar. Pictures just don’t do it justice in terms of its scale.

I will pick out the lovely vertical beams and the curved corner post.

There is also a neatly hidden door on the right hand side and the worktop hinges up.

We were hoping someone would do a Delboy and fall straight through it whilst we were there but were, alas, ultimately disappointed!

The view from behind the bar.

Hard wearing Appollo slabtech worktops and a good sized sink.

There are some handy and deep shelves for glasses.

All our handmade designer furniture is bespoke and unique.

Handmade Designer Furniture – Studies & Offices

I love this oak office but words can not express just how difficult the curved doors were.

The process included some very clever formers, a lot of flexi MDF, some oak veneer and a fair amount of profanity!

Even MDF is part of our handmade designer furniture range.

A home office in Wilstead.

The doors that cover the desk run on neat pocket mechanisms which allow them to slide back into the unit itself, meaning that they don’t impede the customer when they are using the desk.

This was made using oak veneer and then lacquered.

Handmade Designer Furniture – Bedroom Furniture

Some very large and elegant wardrobes in Flitwick.

The doors all feature glass panels at the top and the middle unit is actually hiding a television.

The middle section was also set forward to give a lovely pillar effect at the front.

A nice hand painted dressing table, I particularly like the deep panels on the draw fronts and the fact there is a moulded skirting around the whole of the bottom.

A chest of draws for the same house and made in the same style.

You can see how the unit itself has been set forward to allow for the radiator but the top has been taken all the way back to wall.

A larder unit in a pantry in Clophill.

With the low beams and traditional feel it was important this matched in nicely.

This was hand painted and if you look very carefully you can see both the decorative grooves machined into the end panel to give the look of wood panelling and the decorative moulding that was fitted between the framework and the doors.

We do like a good angled wardrobe!

Cut around the beam so that the doors would not be impeded and featuring a heavily moulded cornice and skirting this was a very pretty piece in a very old and beautiful cottage style home.

Another one of my favourite pieces, the angle here and the placement of the bookcase units made this a real challenge.

This was finished in a spray painted white and featured about 20 individual pieces of framework that had to be planned, cut and sprayed before we fitted the unit.

A curved desk on the other side of the same room.

We using several techniques and clever jigs to get our curves absolutely spot on and with no flat spots.

Handmade Designer Furniture – Lounge & Living Room Furniture

I wonder if you can guess when we fitted this!!

This is made from solid oak and stained to matched the beams to the left hand side and a fire place just out of shot on the right hand side.

The challenge here was scribing it around the exposed brickwork so that we didn’t end up with any huge gaps!!

HANDMADE DESIGNER FURNITURE – PART 3

4 Down!!!! We’re really getting somewhere now.

Starting to get cramp but that’s ok, I’m sure it’ll wear off!

I have published 80 photos now and if you still haven’t seen something that you like then i would suggest that wooden furniture possibly isn’t for you!!

I decided to have some lunch before starting the the next blog on handmade designer furniture, and now i’m starting to think that it might not have been the greatest of ideas.

I had a warm meal and its a warm day so i’m now sat back in the office and trying hard not to fall asleep.

We shall crack on through part 3 on handmade designer furniture. Hopefully i will get a second wind at some point this afternoon but i think i might find this one the tough one.

Also all this typing is starting to take its toll.

I’ve heard of tennis elbow but do you think there is such a thing as bloggers finger?! Once more unto the breach dear friends…….

Handmade Designer Furniture – Seating

I thought i’d start this example of handmade designer furniture with some curved work.

These were made using flexi MDF and a carefully marked out and designed framework behind it all.

They were spray painted and had the walnut curved around them later as a lipping to hold a cushion.

These were made as seating around a circular table.

Handmade Designer Furniture – Overmantles

Another example of handmade designer furniture is the way we can build our overmantles.

This is very traditional looking with the two tone colour and the grooved wall panelling.

I think its the use of the alcove and the fact that the units around the oven are pulled forward that makes this look really special.

Handmade Designer Furniture

Handmade Designer Furniture – Bookcases

This was a large fitted bookcase in Oxford.

This photo had to be taken from quite a way away as it is over 5m long!

It is fitted directly up to the wall and the panel in the middle is designed to hold a wall mounted television with a hole provided for all the cabling.

Handmade Designer Furniture – Wardrobes

This was a very tricky one! A 3m solid cherry completely free-standing wardrobe.

It was designed in three parts just to make it liftable!!

A great example of handmade designer furniture though.

Handmade Designer Furniture

I thought i would also show you what we can put inside our wardrobes.

These hanging rails are brilliant, they light up and work on sensors so that they turn themselves off when the door is closed.

They work using thin LCD strips that fit neatly into the rail.

The wiring all makes is way out of the side of the unit and into the drivers which are neatly positioned behind the framework at the top of the unit.

Handmade Designer Furniture

These wardrobes are in Beaconsfield.

The front panels are all upholstered and the builder fitted the large decorative coving around the tops of our units to make it look as much of a statement as possible.

Handmade Designer Furniture

Another view of the insides of our wardrobes.

These are made using oak veneered MDF and you can see the lighted rails again.

Also you can see how we’ve made use of the space with internal draws.

These are perfect for if you would like the convenience of draws but without breaking up the neat line of doors by using draw fronts on the front of the wardrobes.

Handmade Designer Furniture

Any space is usable!! This is neatly fitted underneath some stairs in Barton-le-clay.

Again showing the flexibility of our order in range from BA components, we can type in the sizes of the angle and their website will work out all the angled doors before they make them millimetre perfect.

Handmade Designer Furniture

Some very traditional wardrobes in Bedford.

I like that the cornice on these runs perfectly in line with the picture rail in the room.

The chunky oak handles work really well with the shaker style doors.

Handmade Designer Furniture

Handmade Designer Furniture – Kitchens

One side of a kitchen in Bedford. this was built around a fully functioning Aga.

This shows how versatile BA components are as all the overmantle bits were made by them.

Handmade Designer Furniture

The other side of the kitchen.

I love the Belfast sink and the granite worktops.

You can also just make out the draining grooves machined into the granite, classic handmade designer furniture.

Handmade Designer Furniture

Handmade Designer Furniture – Dressing Table

A solid and stained dressing table in Wixams.

This was made using solid tulip wood.

Tulip wood is great for staining up like this as it is at the cheaper end of the hardwood market and features a lovely grain.

It also doesn’t have a habit of moving too much like other timbers can.

Handmade Designer Furniture

And a bedside table to match.

can see here that the top has been mitred to the sides of the unit.

means that you don’t see any end grain and that the grain will run all the way around the unit.

These look great with a simple bar handle.

Great looking handmade designer furniture.

Handmade Designer Furniture

The dressing table to match.

This was glass topped with the painted top showing through.

You might notice the flashy handles.

Not really our preference but impressive all the same!!

Handmade Designer Furniture

Handmade Designer Furniture – Alcove

Some alcove units in Ampthill.

I like the fact that these two units are completely different.

A mix of painted and a little oak, you can see the TV fixed to the wall on the right hand unit.

Pratical handmade designer furniture.

Handmade Designer Furniture

An alcoved TV unit in Silsoe.

This was a mix of white spray paint and lacquered oak.

Again a large removable panel was fitted to hold the television and hide all the cabling whilst still allowing them to be completely accessible.

All of the base doors work on push catches to give a very modern look.

Handmade Designer Furniture

Handmade Designer Furniture – Offices

A clever office unit featuring a pocket door system.

Our customer wanted to be able to leave the doors open regularly for work purposes without them impeding on the space in the rest of the room.

A clever example of handmade designer furniture.

Handmade Designer Furniture And here it is with the doors closed.

You would never know that they weren’t regular fitting doors.

The mechanism is all fitted so neatly inside the unit and then hidden with oak veneer panels.

Handmade Designer Furniture

The desk opposite.

I like the mix of lacquered oak an painted.

We also can machine out very neat holes for plugs and cables that can be neatly hidden behind the computer.

Handmade Designer Furniture

And the other end of the desk!

Notice the open unit in the bottom right hand corner for the printer.

Again all the shelves were made to be adjustable giving the customer the option of exactly where they wanted them.

Handmade Designer Furniture

We’re halfway there!!

Time for a cup of tea and a short lie down before we return for part 4.
